Solution

The correct option is A Statement A is true, but Statement B is false
The northern and eastern parts of Sri Lanka consisted of a Tamil majority. Tamils from these provinces demanded regional autonomy for their provinces. Such demands were repeatedly denied by the Sri Lankan government. The denial of regional autonomy resulted in the demand for an independent state for the Sri Lankan Tamils. An extremist organisation called the LTTE, or the Liberation Tigers of the Tamil Eelam supported the idea of 'Tamil Eelam', and employed guerilla tactics and violent warfare to get the government to meet its demands, resulting in a full fledged civil war. The LTTE was defeated by the government in 2009.
