Grass eating animals have a four-chambered stomach. They developed this to digest cellulose present in their diet. Ruminants have a large sac-like structure called rumen between the oesophagus and the small intestine. Rumen is followed by reticulum, omasum and abomasum. The cellulose of the food is broken down here by the action of certain bacteria which can digest cellulose.
