Solution

The correct option is

D

Both statements are true but statement (II)(II)(II) is not the correct explanation of statement (I)(I)(I).

For Cannizzaro reaction absence of alpha hydrogen the necessary criterion

(CH3)3CCHO has no alpha hydrogen , hence it undergoes Cannizzaro reaction as it has not alpha hydrogen.

When 2,2-dimethyl propanal reacts with concentrated sodium hydroxide it is as follows

(CH3)3CCHO+ConcentratedNaOHundergoesreduction−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−(CH3)3CCH3OH

(CH3)3CCHO+ConcentratedNaOHundergoesoxidation−−−−−−−−−−−−−−−(CH3)3CCOONa

Disproportionation reaction is one where oxidation and reduction takes place simultaneously , which happens in cannizaro reaction as shown above.

The steric effect of the 222 methyl group hinders the aldol condensation reaction so it mainly undergoes Cannizzaro reaction. So, Assertion is correct but the reason is not the correct explanation.

However, note that it can undergo cross Aldol condensation with formaldehyde
