statement 1 is true but statement 2 is wrong because we carry the reaction in weakly acidic medium so that it avoids the protonation of the attacking nucleophile. If the medium is highly acidic, then the attacking nucleophile is easily protonated by the acidic hydrogen atoms of the medium.
