if the difference is < 0.5, it is non polar covalent
if it's between 0.5 and 1.5, it's polar covalent
if it's between 1.5 and 2 and contains a metal, it's ionic,otherwise polar covalent
if it's > 0.2, it's ionic
Zn has EN = 1.65
O has EN = 3.44
difference is 1.79 and it contains a metal, so it's ionic.
Generally, Non metal oxides are covalent in nature whereas metal oxides are usually ionic.
So,both the statements are not correct.
