Silk fibres are obtained from the cocoons of silkworms. During the processing of silk, the cocoons are boiled to kill the larvae before it comes out from the cocoon. This process is called stifling.

Once the larvae comes out of the cocoon, a continuous thread of silk cannot be obtained from the cocoon. Stifling or boiling also helps us to store the cocoons for a longer time.
