The stratified epithelium cells have two or more cell layers. They are present in those areas which experience mechanical, chemical, thermal, or osmotic stresses. They are found on dry surfaces of the body like skin, hair, and nails. Due to constant wear and tear, the outermost layer of cells is regularly sloughed off. They are keratinised as they contain keratin protein. Keratinised stratified epithelium cells are present where the outermost cells become hard and dead. They have a major role in the protection and a very limited role in secretion. Due to the presence of keratin, it makes the skin waterproof.
