Question

An alloy of copper and zinc weighs 320 g in water and 302 g in a liquid of density 1.4 g/cm 3. If the density of copper is 8.9 g/cm 3 and that of zinc is 7.4 g/cm 3, find the measure of the masses of copper and zinc in the alloy.

Solution

Let the masses of copper and zinc in the alloy be m2 and m2.total mass of the alloy=m1+m2The volume of the alloy = m18.9+m27.4The volume of the water displaced = m18.9+m27.4.The mass of the water displaced = volume of water displaced×density of water. = m18.9+m27.4×1=m18.9+m27.4.Thus reduced mass of alloy in water = m1+m2-m18.9+m27.4=320-----1Similarly the reduced mass of alloy in the liquid = m1+m2-m18.9+m27.4×1.4=302 -----2Subtracting eqn 2 from eqn 1, we get, m18.9+m27.4×0.4 = 18or m18.9+m27.4= 45----3Putting this value of m18.9+m27.4 of in eqn 1, we get, m1+m2 =320+45=365-----4Now from eqns 3 and 4, we get, m1 = 189.87g and m2 = 17513g.
