Soldier: Napoleon started his career as a second lieutenant in the French Army in 1785. He spent the early years of the Revolution in his native Corsica. During this period, he was a supporter of the Revolution and was promoted to captain in 1792. He rose rapidly through the army during the French Revolutionary Wars on the strength of the victories he commanded during these wars.
Dictator: Napoleon staged a coup in 1799 by overthrowing the ineffective Directory. He became First Consul of France and effectively became the dictator of France.
Emperor: Napoleon declared himself the emperor of France in 1804 and remained in that position for the next ten years. During this period, he conquered nearly all of Europe except Britain and Russia. He also spread the ideals of equality and secularism throughout his European empire. The downfall of Napoleon started with his failed invasion of Russia in 1812. After that, an alliance of Britain, Prussia and Russia in 1814. Napoleon was exiled and his empire ended.
