Question

In a new scale of temperature the lower fixed point is marked as 0 corresponding to the melting point of a substance which is equal to 25oC and the upper fixed point is marked corresponding to the boiling point of the substance which is equal to 175oC. The total length of the scale between the UFP and LFP is divided into 200 parts. Determine the temperature in the new scale when the temperature of a substance measured by a celcius thermometer is 50oC.

Solution

As the LFP and UFP are fixed to 25°c and 175°c, so t-25175-25=50-0100-0, where t is the temperature shown by thermometer in the new scale. So, t-25150=12 or t-25=75or t= 75+25=100°C
