When a fountain pen overflows, we soak the excess ink using a blotting paper. It does does help similarly with cotton. Why?

Blotting paper or cotton used has the property of absorption and it absorbs the excess ink. The particle size of the above said material is such a way that the absorbed ink occupies that intermolecular spaces.
