  • Decomposition reaction is a type of reaction where a compound is broken done into two or more compounds.
  • On the other hand redox reaction is a type of reaction where both oxidation and reduction occur.
  • Here it is given that Ferrous sulphate(FeSO4) is being heated, and a brown solid of Ferric oxide(Fe2O3) and two gases Sulphur dioxide(SO2) and Sulphur trioxide(SO3) are formed.
  • The complete balanced reaction is:

2FeSO4(s)Ferroussulphateā†’Fe2O3(s)Ferricoxide+SO2(g)Sulphurdioxide+SO3(g)Sulphurtrioxide

  • Here we can clearly see that Ferrous sulphate(FeSO4) decomposes into Ferric oxide(Fe2O3), Sulphur dioxide(SO2) and Sulphur trioxide(SO3).

Redox reaction of Ferrous sulphate(FeSO4):-

  • The oxidation number of Iron in Ferrous sulphate is +2, which gets changed to +3in Ferric oxide after being heated.

  • On the other hand oxidation number of Sulphur in Ferric sulphate is+6, which gets changed to +4in Sulphur dioxide.
