Question

how can we know which substance is more volatile? Gas is more volatile than liquid and liquid is more volatile than solid but how can we identify which is more volatile if the state is same?

Solution

1. A substance is volatile in comparison to other when one changes to vapour at a lower temperature than other.

2. If two substances are in same state, for e,g acetone and water, we judge volatility by above concept.

3. Acetone at room temperature changes into vapour form faster than water, so it is more volatile.
