Question

is it correct to say that if electrode potl is -ve then oxidation takes place easily and reduction if its +ve electrode potl? -electrochemistry

Solution

In a simple language, if the species is more reacive than hydrogen, it will have a negative electrode potential and hence they have tendency to lose electons more easily. Oxidation reacion occurs i.e. electrons are given up to the electrode by the species being oxidized. On the other hand, the species which have negative potential are less reactive than hydrogen and they can not lose electrons easily. Reduction reaction takes place i.e. electrons are taken from the electrode by the species being reduced.Oxidation reaction takes place at ANODE and reduction reaction takes place at CATHODE.
