Question

What is the effect of dilution on molar conductance of a solution??
What is the effect of dilution on specific conductance of a solution??

Open in App
Solution

1) Molar conductivity is defined as the conductivity of an electrolyte solution divided by the molar concentration of the electrolyte and so measures the efficiency with which an electrolyte conducts the electricity in its solution.

So that,

m = K /C (where K = conductivity of electrolyte solution and C = molar concentration of electrolyte)

Now, if the dilution is increased, the concentration of the electrolyte will definitely decrease with increase in dilution.

Hence, decrease in C will increase the value of Molar conductance (∧m).

So, increase in dilution increases the Molar conductivity (∧m).
2) Specific conductivity (Conductivity)- It is defined as the conductance of a solution of 1 m length and having 1 sq.m as the area of cross section. It is simply conductance of a solution when cell constant is 1. R = (ᵨ )l/A , 1/ᵨ = Ƙ (conductivity) and 1/R = G (conductance)l/A = Cell constant.
Specific conductance will decrease on dilution as the number of ions will decrease w.r.t volume.
