Salvador Allende was the President of Chile who led the ​Popular Unity coalition to victory in the presidential election
in 1970.Salvador Following his victory he introduced number of policies and programmes for the poor and the workers .

Allende took the following steps:

a. He introduced number of policies and programmes for the poor and the workers.
b. He brought about reforms in the educational system.
c. Distribution of free milk for children.
d. Redistribution of land to the landless farmers.
e. He opposed foreign policies that exploited natural resources of the country like copper.
f. People enjoyed political freedom and rights in Chile under Allende's rule.
g. His rule could certainly be regarded as democratic.

However, it was in 1973, an elected government was overthrown by a military ruler Pinochet who the established military dictatorship depriving people of their political freedoms , not tolerating any dissent to his rule
