Question

Structural Formula And Electron Dot Structure Of Chlorine.

Open in App
Solution

Part 1: Structural formula of Chlorine

  • Atomic number of Chlorine is 17, and its electronic configuration is1s22s22p63s23p5.
  • The structural formula for ChlorineCl is:

  • The first shell(K)contains 2 electrons, the second shell(L) contains 8 electrons and the third shell(M) contains 7 electrons.

Part 2: Electron dot structure of chlorine

  • Since the outermost shell that is M shell contains 7 valence electrons, hence valency of Chlorine is 1
  • As we know according to the octet rule, Chlorine needs 1 more electron to complete its outermost shell and become stable.
  • Thus it combines with another chlorine atom by sharing 1 electron each to complete their octet state.

  • The crosses represent the valence electrons present in the outermost shell.
