Let x students attended the picnic.

Expenses per student = Rs $\frac{96}{x}$

No. of students who were supposed to be there on the picnic = $x + 4$

In such case, the cost per student would have been = Rs $\frac{96}{(x + 4)}$

With the difference in cost being Rs 2, we can write the equation as $\frac{96}{x} - \frac{96}{x + 4} = 2$

On solving, we get x = -16 (not possible since no. of students cannot be negative) or x = 12
