Solution

Each subpart: 2.5 Marks

(a) Equivalent resistance of 1.5Ω and 3Ω in parallel,
1R1=11.5+13=2+13=33=1Ω
or R1=1Ω
Equivalent resistance of 6Ω and 12Ω in parallel,
1R2=16+112=2+112=312=14
or R2=4Ω
Now, the total equivalent resistance of circuit, R=R1+R2=1+4=5Ω
Current in main circuit, I=VR=95=1.80 A
(b) Potential difference across 1.5Ω and 3Ω , V1=IR=1.8×1=1.8 V
Current in 1.5Ω resistor,
I1=V1R=1.81.5=1.2 A
Current in 3Ω resistor,
I2=V1R=1.83=0.6 A
Now, potentiaal difference across 6Ω and 12Ω, V2=1.8×4=7.2 V
Current in 6Ω resistor,
I3=V2R=7.26=1.2 A
Current in 12Ω resistor,
I4=V2R=7.212=0.6 A
