Study the experimental set up in figure and then answer the questions that follow:
a) What phenomenon is being studied by this set up?
b) Explain the phenomenon mentioned in (a) above
c) What is meant by 'semipermeable' membrane?
d) What will you observe in the set up after about half an hour? Give a reason for your answer.

a - Osmosis is a phenomenon which is studied here.

b- Osmosis is a phenomenon where pure water flows from a dilute solution through a semi permeable membrane to a higher concentrated solution.

c- Semipermeable membrane will allow only specific molecules to pass through it.

d- After half an hour we will observe equilibrium as a result of osmosis.

In A part there is 10 % sucrose solution and in B part there is 5% sucrose solution , so water will flow from B to A as water moves from hypotonic to hypertonic solution, untill it reaches equilibrium.
