Micropropogation is the tissue culture technique used for rapid vegetative multiplication of ornamental and fruit plants by using small sized explants.
In this method a small amount of tissue from suitable part of the parent is excised and grown in culture medium. The tissue develops to form callus. Callus is irregular, unorganized and undifferentiated mass of actively dividing cells. This callus is differentiated to produce plantlets, by supplementing the medium with hormones like auxin and cytokinin. These plantlets develops into plants. Such plants are genetically identical to each other and to their parent and are termed as somaclones.
Clone referes to an aggregate of genetically identical cells or organisms asexually produced by a single cell or organism.
Many important fruit plants and ornamental plants (orchids, Chrysanthemum) are produced by this method. Apple, banana, tomato, etc are produced commercially via micro-propogation.
