Solution

The correct option is C X: Soap; Y: Litmus solution
Turmeric turns red in ‘X’ which means 'X' is basic. Out of the given options, ‘X’ should be soap as soap is basic but vinegar and tamarind contain acids and therefore are acidic.

Curd contains lactic acid. So, it is acidic. Toothpaste is basic. Curd (acid) and toothpaste (base) turn the colour of indicator ‘Y’ to red and blue respectively. We know that the litmus solution shows red colour with acidic substances and blue colour with basic substances. Thus, indicator ‘Y’ is a litmus solution.
