Question

Study the following table showing the components of water potential of four cells of an actively transpiring plant.

CellSolute potential (MPa)Pressure potential (MPa)
A- 0.680.42
B- 0.750.36
C- 0.830.47
D- 0.570.29
Identify the four cells as root hair, cortical cell, endodermal cell (lacking Casparian strips) and pericycle cell respectively in the young root (assuming symplastic water flow through them).

Solution

The correct option is C A, D, C, B
Cell A, B, C, D has water potentials respectively -0.26, -0.39, 0.36 and 0.28. So, A is root hair as it has highest water potential. When we go to towards the centre of the stem the water potential decreases. So, the B is pericycle, C is endodermal cell and D is cortical cell, as they are present towards the periphery respectively.
