Solution

The correct option is C pH
Bioreactors are large vessels that are used for large scale culturing of cells (plant, animal or microbial cells) to obtain specific gene products for commercial use.

A bioreactor provides appropriate conditions, such as, optimum temperature, pH, nutrients, oxygen (aerobic bioreactors), etc., for the optimal growth of cells under culture.

The given diagram shows a simple stirred-tank bioreactor which consists of the following components:
i) A central shaft
ii) Flat bladed impellers for the purpose of stirring
iii) an oxygen delivery system
iv) a foam control machine
v) temperature and pH control systems
vi) a cooling jacket
vii) sampling ports for removal of small samples of culture, periodically.

The part labelled X, in the diagram, allows the addition of buffers in order to maintain the optimum pH of the culture broth. Several factors, such as temperature, carbon dioxide level, lactic acid concentration, etc., affect the pH of the medium. Addition of buffers help to regulate the pH levels in a bioreactor. Generally, pH ranging between 6-8 is needed for the optimum cell growth and biosynthesis of desired gene products.

Cooling jackets containing water envelope the bioreactors externally to bring the temperature down to an optimum level.

Oxygen enters the bioreactor through the air inlet. Its uniform availability throughout the culture medium is maintained by the impellers.
