Question

Substance which is reduced is reducing agent ....if yes or no why ...

Pls help me with detail explanation of reduction , oxidation reactions and redox reactions

Solution

A reducing agent is oxidized, because it loses electrons in the redox reaction. Examples of reducing agents include the earth metals, formic acid, and sulfite compounds. A reducing agent reduces other substances and loses electrons; therefore, its oxidation state increases.
A chemical reaction in which hydrogen is added to, or oxygen is removed from, a compound. Opposite of oxidation.

Reduction -

Reduction is a chemical reaction that involves the gaining of electrons by one of the atoms involved in the reaction. The term refers to the element that accepts electrons, as the oxidation state of the element that gains electrons is lowered.

An example of a reduction is when iron reacts with oxygen, forming a chemical called rust. In that example, the iron is oxidized and the oxygen is reduced.

oxidation reactions-

Oxidation is any chemical reaction that involves the moving of electrons. Specifically, it means the substance that gives away electrons is oxidized.

When iron reacts with oxygen it forms a chemical called rust because it has been oxidized (The iron has lost some electrons.) and the oxygen has been reduced (The oxygen has gained some electrons.).

Oxidation is the opposite of reduction.

Oxidation is the loss of electrons.

Redox reactions -

Redox is a chemical reaction in which the oxidation states of atoms are changed. Any such reaction involves both a reduction process and a complementary oxidation process, two key concepts involved with electron transfer processes. Redox reactions include all chemical reactions in which atoms have their oxidation state changed; in general, redox reactions involve the transfer of electrons between chemical species. The chemical species from which the electron is stripped is said to have been oxidized, while the chemical species to which the electron is added is said to have been reduced. It can be explained in simple terms:

  • Oxidation is the loss of electrons or an increase in oxidation state by a molecule, atom, or ion.
  • Reduction is the gain of electrons or a decrease in oxidation state by a molecule, atom, or ion.
