Question

______ React With Oxygen at Room Temperature To Form Their Basic Oxide

Open in App
Solution

Basic oxides:-

  • Basic oxides are generally formed when a metal reacts with oxygen at room temperature.
  • The general reaction goes by:

Metal+OxygenBasicoxide

  • These basic oxide are alkaline in nature as they release hydroxide ions(OH-)
  • For example when Calcium reacts with Oxygen it forms a basic oxide of Calcium oxide(CaO):

2Ca(s)Calcium+2O2(g)Oxygen2CaO(s)Calciumoxide

  • On the further reaction of these basic oxides with water, a base is formed.
  • When Calcium oxide reacts with water, a base of Calcium hydroxide Ca(OH)2 is formed:

CaO(s)Calciumoxide+H2O(l)WaterCa(OH)2(aq)Calciumhydroxide

Therefore, Metal react with oxygen at room temperature to form their basic oxide
