Solution

The correct option is C Incomplete oxidation
Respiratory quotient (RQ) or respiratory coefficient is a measurement of the ratio between oxygen (O2) an organism intakes and carbon dioxide (CO2) the organism eliminates, expressed with the formula RQ=CO2 eliminated/O2 absorbed. In succulent plants, the RQ is less than one in the night. This is due to to incomplete oxidation of carbohydrates which leads to production of acids such as malic acid, oxalic acid and in extreme cases, no CO2 is evolved at all. This makes the RQ less than 1. Thus, option C is correct and other options are incorrect.
