Sugar charcoal is a type of plant charcoal, obtained from cane sugar. It can be obtained by destructive distillation of cane sugar or by adding concentrated sulphuric acid (H2SO4) to cane sugar.

Conc. H2SO4 is used because it is a strong dehydrating agent and absorbs water from the cane sugar leaving behind pure carbon i.e. charcoal.
