Blood Group
Blood groups were discovered in 1900 by a scientist named Karl Landsteiner.
The four major blood groups are based on whether or not you have two specific antigens - A and B on the surface of RBCs.
It is known as the ABO Blood Group System.
Group A has the A antigen and B antibody.
Group B has the B antigen and the A antibody.
Group AB has A and B antigens but neither A nor B antibodies.
Group O doesn’t have A or B antigens but has both A and B antibodies.
(i) Blood Group A
People with blood group A can safely get blood from people having blood group A and O.
(ii) Blood Group B
People with blood group B can safely get blood from people having blood group B and O.
(iii) Blood Group AB
People with blood group AB can safely get blood from people having blood group A,B,AB and O.
Person with AB blood group does not possess any antibodies, hence there is no reaction if any blood group is transferred to such patients.
They are called universal recipients.
(iv) Blood Group O
People with blood group O can safely get blood from people having only blood group O.
Person with O blood group does not possess any antigen, hence it does not elicit any agglutination reaction in the recipient body after blood transfusion.
