Question

Suggest two ways in which friction can be reduced.

Open in App
Solution

  1. Friction: It is a contact force that comes into existence when irregularities present on two surfaces get interlocked and oppose the relative motion between the surfaces.

Friction can be reduced by using the following methods,

  1. Applying oil or lubricant on the surfaces reduces friction: Lubricant forms a thin layer between the two surfaces which smoothens irregularities and reduces friction.
  2. Using ball bearing and wheels to introduce sliding friction: A heavy object with wheels moves easily over another surface as rolling friction is less than sliding friction.
