Let us consider smaller number $=x$ & large number $=y$

$\therefore$ we have

$x+y=42$ ...(1) and

$x+y=42$ ...(2)

using the method of substitution to solve the pair of linear equations

$y=\frac{4x}{3}$

$x+y=42$

$x+\frac{4x}{3}=42$

$\frac{7x}{3}=42$

$x=18$

as $x+y=42$

$\therefore y=24$
