The correct option is C Deep sea hydrothermal ecosystem
Sun is the ultimate source of energy for almost all ecosystems on earth except for the deep sea hydrothermal ecosystem. Hydrothermal vents are hot water springs found deep in the ocean.
These ecosystems have a very high concentration of H2S which are used by the bacteria residing there to convert it to usable forms of energy by a process called chemosynthesis. Thus chemosynthetic bacteria are the primary producers of the deep sea hydrothermal vents. The animals in the vent feed on these chemosynthetic bacteria.
In all other ecosystems including the pond ecosystem and terrestrial ecosystems, solar energy is used by photosynthetic organisms (producers) to synthesise food. The energy in the producers is further obtained directly or indirectly by animals. Thus energy gets transferred from one trophic level to the next.
