Question 15
Sunlight, chlorophyll, carbon dioxide, water and minerals are raw materials essential for photosynthesis. Do you know where they are available? Fill in the blanks with the appropriate raw materials.
(a) Available in the plant: __
(b) Available in the soil: __, __
(c) Available in the air: __
(d) Available during day: __
(a) Chlorophyll: A green colour pigment present in the leaves. It helps leaves to capture the energy of the sunlight.
(b) Water, minerals: These are the raw materials which are essential to carry out the process of photosynthesis. They are obtained from the soil.
(c) Carbon dioxide: The raw material which is available in the air for photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide from the air is taken in through the tiny pores present on the surface of the leaves. These tiny pores are called stomata.
(d) Sunlight: The process of photosynthesis takes place only in the presence of sunlight. The chlorophyll helps leaves to capture the energy of the sunlight.
The equation showing the process of photosynthesis is as follows:
Carbon dioxide + Water Sunlight,Chlorophyll−−−−−−−−−−−−−→ Carbohydrate + Oxygen
