Suppose 2 kg of sugar contains 9×106 crystals. How many sugar crystals are there in (i) 5 kg of sugar (ii) 1.2 kg of sugar

Let x and y crystals be in 5kg of sugar and 1.2kg of sugar, respectively.
Clearly, it is a case of direct variation.
(i) 9×1062=x5
x=5×9×1052
x=9×10×106494×107=2.25×107
Hence, 5kg of sugar contains 2.25×107 crystals.

(ii) 9×1062=y1.2
y=1.2×9×1062
y=0.6×9×106=5.4×106=5.4×106
Hence, 1.2 kg of sugar contains 5.4×106 crystals.
