Question

Suppose 50 bacteria are placed in a flask containing nutrients for the bacteria so that they can multiply.
A study at 35oC gave the following results:
Time(minute)015304560Number of bacteria50100200400800
Show that the rate of production of bacteria is of first-order. How many bacteria will be there after 3 hours?

Solution

For bacterial growth,
k=2.303tlog10(aa+x)
At 15 minutes: k=2.30315log10(50100)
=0.0462min1
At 30 minutes: k=2.30330log10(50200)
=0.0462min1
At 45 minutes: k=2.30345log10(50400)=0.0462min1
Same values of rate constants show that the process corresponds to first order.
Let there be 'n' bacteria after 3 hrs.
k=2.303tlog10(aa+x)
0.0462=2.303180log1050n
n=2.04×105
