Suppose a gas sample in all hace 6×1023 molecule . Each 1/3rd of the molecules have rms speed 104cm/sec and 2×104cm/sec and 3×104cm/sec. Calculate the rms speed of gas molecules in sample.

  • Out of 6×1023 molecules, 2×1023 molecules have rms speed 104cm/s, 2×1023 molecules have rms speed 2×104cm/s and 2×1023 molecules have rms speed 3×104cm/s.
  • The rms speed of gas sample can be calculated as,
vrms=[2×1023×(104)2]+[2×1023×(2×104)2]+[2×1023×(3×104)2]6×1023
vrms=14×1083=2.16×104cm/s
