Suppose a metal spoon is to be electroplated with copper. We will use copper sulphate solution as the electrolyte. When electricity is passes through it copper ions move towards the cathode. What will happen to the sulphate ions which are negatively charged?

Cathode reaction: Cu2+(aq) + 2e- → Cu(s)

Anode reaction: 2H2O(l) → O2(g) + 4H+(aq) + 4e-
