Solution

One light year is the distance travelled by light in a year. So, if a star, 100 light years away from the Earth, explodes, it is highly unlikely for us to see the explosion, as the light from the site of explosion will reach the earth only after 100 years, thus, the explosion will be visible on earth only after 100 years.
