The correct option is C 5.56 km
It is to be noted that lightning and thunder takes place at the same time and just that their speeds are different, we receive them at different time duration.
The speed of the sound, distance travelled and the time taken relationship is given as follows.
Speedofsound=DistancetravelledTimetaken
From this equation the Distance travelled is derived as
Distancetravelled=Speedofsound×Timetaken
In the question it is given that, the speed of thunder sound is 343 m/s and the time taken between the lightning and thunder is 16.2 seconds.
That is, Distancetravelled=343m/s×16.2seconds
= 5556.6 meters.
Hence, the distance to be travelled by the lightning is 5556.6 meters of 5.56 km.
