Question

Suppose the bob of the previous problem has a speed of 1.4 m/s when the string makes an angle of 0.20 radian with the vertical. Find the tension at this instant. You can use cosθ 1θ2/2 and sinθθ for small θ.

Solution

Bob has a velocity 1.4 m/sec, when the string makes an angle of 0.2 radian,

g = 0.1 kg, m = 100,

r = 1 m, v = 1.4 m/sec,

From the diagram,

Tmg cos θ=mv2R

T=mv2R+mg cos θ

Given cosθ=1θ22

T=0.1×(1.4)21+(0.1)×9.8(1θ22)

=0.196+0.98×(1222)

=0.196+0.98×(0.98)

=0.196+0.9604

=1.156 N1.16 N
