Question

Suppose there is a uniform metre scale floating in space. Let's say I apply a force of 10N at the 10 cm mark in anticlockwise direction and I apply a force of 5N on the 100 cm mark in clockwise direction. Now what will happen to the scale?

Plz explain. Thanks

Solution

Since you are applying two parallel forces at different length,it induces a torque in the scale and the scale starts to rotate in anticlockwise direction.
Moreover since the forces are unequal,it will be having translational motion too.
i.e the scale moves in certain direction along with rotating.
Since there is no resistive force in space, the rotation and movement continue till an external force stops it.
