Question

Suppose you and your friend are on the moon. Will you be able to hear any sound produced by your friend?

Solution

  1. Sound is produced due to vibration and requires a material medium for its propagation.
  2. In solids, liquids, and gases, energy is transferred between the molecules, so sound can travel.
  3. The more tightly the molecules are packed in a medium, the faster sound can travel.
  4. In places where there are no molecules, such as vacuum, sound cannot travel.
  5. On the surface of the moon, there is no air, and hence no material medium, which is required for the propagation of sound.

So the sound produced by the friend cannot be heard on the surface of the moon.
