Question

Suppose you have a glass of juice in the outer space. Would you be able to drink it with a straw ? Why / why not ?

Solution

  • You can not 'suck' anything in space. Sucking juice involves removing (lowering the number of) the air molecules in one location (here, inside the straw) to create a lower pressure than in another location (here, inside the juice box).
  • This pressure difference is what pushes the juice upwards.
  • But, in space, there are no air molecules to remove, hence no pressure difference can be created which would push the juice upwards towards your mouth. Therefore, no sucking of juice using straw in space. The straw would be absolutely useless up there.
  • Although, due to lack of gravity, the juice would be floating around as spherical blobs, so you can just swallow it.
