Question

Suppose you have taken a dilute solution of oleic acid in such a way that its concentration becomes 0.01 cm3 of oleic acid per cm3 of the solution. Then you make a thin film of this solution (monomolecular thickness) of area 4 cm2 by considering 100 spherical drops of radius 340π13x10-3cm. Then the thickness of the oleic acid layer will be x×10-14m where x is _________.

Solution

Step 1: Given data

Radius r=340π13x10-3cm.

Number of droplets= 100

Area= 4cm2

Step 2: Calculating the thickness

Volume=Areaoffilm×thickness

Also, we know that,

Volume of film= volume of 100 spherical drops

4tT=100×43πr34tT=100×4π3x340πx10-94tT=10-8cm3

Hence thickness of the film is

tT=10-84tT=2.5×10-9cm=25×10-10cmtT=25×10-12m

And for oleic acid, the thickness will be

t0=0.01tT25×10-14m

Thus the value of x becomes 25

Therefore, Then the thickness of the oleic acid layer will be x×10-14m where x is 25.
