The autonomic nervous system controls the internal organs and glands of the body.
There are three divisions of the autonomic nervous system- the sympathetic nervous system, the parasympathetic nervous system, and the enteric nervous system.
In the sympathetic nervous system, the cell bodies of the preganglionic neurons are located in the lateral horns of the grey matter of the 12th thoracic and first 2 lumbar segments of the spinal cord.
Therefore, the sympathetic system is also called the thoracolumbar division.
