Differences between an element and a compound:

Element

Compound

1. An element is a pure substance that can not be broken down into simpler substance.1. A compound is a pure substance that is formed when two or more elements combine in a fixed ratio and hence can be broken down into those elements.
2. An element consists of the same type of atoms.2. A compound is made up of different types of atoms as it is formed by the combination of two or more elements.
3. The property shown by the element is the property the atom that comprises that element.3. The property of the compound is very different from the atoms that comprise the compound.
4. Number of elements known to humans is 118 till now.4. Number of compounds known to humans till now is much higher than the number of elements as compounds are formed by the combination of the elements.
