Question

Tabulate the difference in the characteristics of states of matter

Open in App
Solution

Matter — Anything is that, has the mass, occupies space, and assume by sensory organs to be considered a matter

  • Generally, matters are three types, in spec
  • solid — A substance that has fixed volume, shape & size due to high intermolecular force
  • Liquid — A substance that has fixed volume, but not fixed shape & size due to moderate inter-molecular force
  • Gas — A substance that has no fixed volume, shape & size due to low inter-molecular force
  • Plasma — it is made up of free electrons, for example shining of a star
  • Bose-Einstein condensate — Any substance gets - 272.150C then it reached that stage where volume is almost is zero
  • some materials can exist in all three states
  • For example — pen, pencil, copies, book, etc

The difference in the characteristics of states of matter

Sr. no.SolidLiquid Gas
volume, shape & size Solid has a fixed shape and volume Liquids have fixed volume but no fixed shape volume, shape, and size not fix
Intermolecular force they possess high inter-molecular forceModerate level of intermolecular forces possess low inter-molecular forces
Rigidity High rigidity low rigidity too low rigidity
Compressible incompressible compressible too low compressible
Fluidity Do not flow can flow can flow
