Solution

The correct option is D (1)-rice, (2)- Taiwan

The enormous increase in production of food grains like wheat and rice that resulted due to the development of new, high-yielding varieties is called the green revolution. This was possible because of various plant breeding techniques.

Rice is the staple food of most of the Indians. The rice production went up from 35 million tonnes to 89.5 million tonnes during the period 1960 to 2000. This was possible because of the development of several semi-dwarf varieties of rice.

The high yielding semi-dwarf varieties of rice were derived from the IR-8, which was developed at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Philippines and Taichung Native-1 from Taiwan.

The wheat production increased from 11 million tonnes to 75 million tonnes during the period 1960-2000. The semi-dwarf variety of wheat was developed at the International Centre for Wheat and Maize Improvement in Mexico by Norman E. Borlaug.
Sonalika and Kalyan sona are high yielding and disease resistant varieties of wheat introduced all over the wheat-growing belt of India.
