Take two similar balloons and inflate them equally. Suspend them on either side of a meter scale, as shown in the fig-1. Balance the scale in middle with the help of a peg. As we burst the balloon, its size decreases because air inside it escapes. This proves that air occupies space. Secondly, after bursting one of the balloons the meter scales tilts towards the inflated balloon, this also proves that air has mass. Anything which occupies space and has mass is called as matter. Therefore, air can be called as matter.
