Question

Taking N2 and O2 as main components of the air (79%N2,21%O2 by volume) what is the molecular mass of air? How has it been arrived at?

Solution

For a mixture of gases, the average molecular mass is taken.

Average molecular mass =xiMi=xN2MN2+xo2Mo2 where xN2 and xo2 are mole fractions of N2 and O2 and MN2 and MO2 are their molecular masses.

As equal volumes contain equal number of moles, therefore, their molar ratio is same as ratio of their volumes.

xN2=0.79,xO2=0.21. Also MN2=28u,MO2=32u

Average molecular mass
=0.79×28+0.21×32u
=22.12+6.72u=(28.84u)
